Are you aware of the Pareto Principle, also known as the 80-20 rule or the law of the vital few?
I wasn’t until recently, at least I wasn’t aware of that it actually is a rule and principle with its own name, even though I can see the effects from it all the time.
However, I think it’s a good time to consider this law these days when setting up your goals for 2009.
The 20 80 rule, which was first discovered by Fritz Wilfried Pareto, an Italian sociologist, economist, and philosopher (1848 – 1923) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.
Think about that! How can this principle effect your overall success if you incorporate it in your every day life? Find out which 20% to focus on and get 80% of the results.
I certainly like this rule, I have taken it to my heart and made it my primary goal for 2009 to focus on the 20% activities that creates 80% of my income. It makes me feel good, really good… No more wasting time on the 80% activities creating 20% of my income.
Now when I know the name of this remarkable law, I see it’s consequences everywhere. It’s obvious, not only that 20% of the population controls 80% of the world’s income, but also in minor everyday situations like wearing 20% of my clothes 80% of the time, cooking 20% of the recipes I know 80% of the time, 80 % of my emails wastes my time and so on…
Of course the numbers are only a rough estimation, it could be 90-10, 70-30 or some other numbers. The importance of this law is that the majority of of the effects come from a minority of causes.
You don’t need to work more in order to gain more success, in fact you should work less, focusing on the right things!
Research says that during the Stone Age people were hunting and collecting food less than 20% of the time. So what were they doing the rest of the time? Relaxing I suppose.
Maybe we human beings are not made to be productive more than 20% of our time.

You’ve just got to love the 80/20 rule! Very fascinating. But what is even more interesting is learning how to set intentions in your life to create success or anything else you desire.
